Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its ongoing two-week warning strike.
ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to him, the decision followed a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC), which lasted through the night and concluded around 4:00 a.m.
Piwuna explained that the strike was initially declared due to the federal government’s delay in meeting ASUU’s demands, but that recent engagements had shown progress.
“We’ve had useful engagements with representatives of the government regarding the draft renegotiation of the 2009 agreement. Although much still needs to be done, we are not where we were before the strike began,” he said.
He added that the NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike in recognition of the efforts by students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who intervened to encourage dialogue.
ASUU had declared the warning strike on Monday, October 13, to press for several outstanding issues, including:
Conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement,
Release of withheld 3.5 months’ salaries,
Revitalisation and sustainable funding of public universities,
End to the victimisation of lecturers at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO,
Payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears,
Settlement of promotion arrears spanning over four years, and
Release of withheld third-party deductions, such as cooperative contributions and union check-off dues.
Piwuna emphasized that while the strike is suspended, ASUU remains committed to ensuring that all pending demands are fully met.
