The late Sommie Maduagwu, a journalist with Arise TV and former beauty queen, has been laid to rest following her tragic death during a robbery attack at her home in Abuja last month.

Sommie passed away on September 29, 2025, after reportedly being attacked by robbers in her residence. Her burial took place on October 18 at her family’s compound in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, following a solemn funeral Mass at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.

Family members, friends, colleagues, and dignitaries — including the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi — gathered to pay their last respects. The atmosphere was deeply emotional as her remains were committed to the earth.

During his homily, Rev. Fr. Peter Ezewuzie of St. Theresa’s Parish urged the grieving family to find comfort in the belief that Sommie lived a purposeful and impactful life.

“The Lord knows the beginning and the end,” he said. “You may feel her life was cut short, but we must trust that God’s plan is perfect. She lived a quality life, not measured by length but by impact.”

Following the service, Peter Obi addressed mourners, expressing his condolences and emphasizing the need to take solace in faith.

“We cannot question God,” he said. “Her death is painful, but we must believe she’s in a better place. Please remember her and her family in your prayers.”

He added that before leaving Birmingham, he told those around him he was returning home to attend the burial of “one of my daughters,” reflecting his deep sense of loss and compassion for the family.

The passing of Sommie Maduagwu has left a void in Nigerian journalism, with colleagues and admirers remembering her as a vibrant, dedicated professional who brought warmth and integrity to her work.
