Nigeria’s Super Eagles will this evening take on the Crocodiles of Lesotho in a must-win encounter at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa — a fixture that could determine the nation’s fate in the race to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The encounter comes with everything on the line for Nigeria, who were staring at back-to-back World Cup absences until a recent twist in Group C standings threw them a lifeline.

After being held to a 1–1 draw by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in September, the Eagles seemed out of contention. However, FIFA’s decision to deduct points from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player reopened the qualification race, leaving Nigeria just three points behind group leaders Benin and South Africa with two games left to play.

Qualification race blown wide open

With Benin sitting top on 14 points (goal difference +4) and South Africa second also on 14 points (+2), Nigeria remain in third on 11 points (+2), tied with Rwanda, who have a neutral goal difference.

The arithmetic is simple — Nigeria must win both remaining games and hope their rivals stumble. Anything less could spell the end of another World Cup dream.

Pressure and history

Since 2019, both sides have clashed three times, with Nigeria winning twice and drawing once. But memories of the 1–1 draw in Uyo during the reverse fixture still linger, and Lesotho will fancy another upset at home.

So far, Nigeria’s qualification campaign has been inconsistent — two wins, five draws, and one defeat. Lesotho, on the other hand, have managed two wins, three draws, and three losses.

Chelle urges focus, aggression

Head coach Éric Chelle has called for intensity and concentration from his players. Speaking at Thursday’s pre-match press conference in Polokwane, he noted that while football can be unpredictable, the team’s objective is clear — three points or nothing.

“We must start strong and stay focused for 90 minutes. Football can turn on small moments, but we control our attitude and fight,” Chelle said.

Kick-off and broadcast details

The crucial Group C showdown kicks off at 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Nigeria time) at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane.
