Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have sealed a place in the Round of 16 at the ongoing 24th FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after battling Colombia to a 1–1 draw in the early hours of Monday.

The seven-time African champions showed resilience at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca, where goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt pulled off key saves in the 23rd and 26th minutes to keep the South Americans at bay during a tense opening spell.

Despite Colombia’s early dominance, Nigeria looked the more dangerous side going forward, with Tahir Maigana, Kparobo Arierhi, and Suleman Sani keeping the opposition defence on their toes and hitting the woodwork on multiple occasions.

Colombia eventually found the breakthrough in the 51st minute, when Kener Gonzalez converted from Neyser Villareal’s assist to give his side the lead.

Unfazed, the Flying Eagles fought back strongly, with defender Odinaka Okoro almost equalising with a powerful header in the 76th minute. Their persistence paid off in the 86th minute, when captain Daniel Bameyi coolly converted from the penalty spot after a Colombian defender handled Maigana’s goal-bound shot.

Nigeria nearly snatched a late winner three minutes later, but Arierhi’s effort was blocked inside the box.

The result means Nigeria progress to the knockout stage, where they will face Argentina at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago on Wednesday — a repeat of their previous U-20 World Cup quarter-final clash in Argentina, which the Flying Eagles won 2–0 in San Juan.

Elsewhere, Colombia will take on South Africa, while Norway are set to meet Paraguay in the other Round of 16 fixtures.
