The Lagos State Government has sealed a two-storey building that partially collapsed on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, in Alimosho Local Government Area on Wednesday evening.

The incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., trapped six construction workers beneath the rubble. They were later rescued by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other first responders.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the development, saying five victims were rushed to a nearby private hospital, while one man, who sustained a fracture and multiple bruises, was taken by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to LASUTH, Ikeja, where he was admitted in stable condition.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service revealed that the structure, originally a bungalow, was being converted into a two-storey building while occupants still lived on the ground floor. The collapse affected the rear section of the building.

“No fatalities were recorded. Five male construction workers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly taken for treatment,” said the agency’s Controller-General, Margaret Adeseye.

On Thursday, officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency sealed the premises as investigations into the cause of the collapse commenced.

Residents told reporters that the incident occurred during heavy rainfall, delaying immediate awareness and rescue efforts. Some locals began rescue operations before emergency agencies arrived at about 6:30 p.m.

The latest collapse comes barely two weeks after four people died when a three-storey building caved in at Bornu Street, Ebute Meta, heightening concerns over building safety in Lagos.
