Spanish midfield icon Sergio Busquets has confirmed he will retire from professional football at the end of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano first broke the news on Friday, revealing that the Inter Miami star will end his playing career in October. Busquets, 36, later confirmed it with a tribute video on Instagram, writing: “A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”
Widely regarded as one of the finest defensive midfielders of his generation, Busquets is celebrated for his intelligence, composure, and game-controlling ability.
He spent nearly his entire club career at Barcelona, winning multiple La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies. On the international stage, he was instrumental in Spain’s golden era, helping La Roja secure the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
Busquets joined Inter Miami in 2023, reuniting with former teammate Lionel Messi. His retirement marks the end of a glittering career spanning more than 15 years at the top level.
