Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign has suffered a major setback after first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali picked up an injury while in action for his South African club, Chippa United.
The 29-year-old was forced off on a stretcher during the first half of Tuesday’s league clash against Richards Bay, grimacing in pain after collapsing on the pitch. Chippa United’s medical team is still assessing the extent of the damage.
His injury comes at a crucial moment for the Super Eagles, who face back-to-back qualifiers against Rwanda and group leaders South Africa next month.
Nwabali, capped 21 times, has been a dependable figure for Nigeria and is widely regarded as a key part of coach Eric Chelle’s plans. His absence could leave the squad exposed, particularly as the goalkeeping department is already under strain.
Maduka Okoye is unavailable due to a two-month suspension for betting offences, while the other options lack experience at international level. Amas Obasogie, who plies his trade in Tanzania, is yet to debut, and Adebayo Adeleye of Volos NPS in Greece has just one cap. Teenage prospect Ebenezer Harcourt, only 15, is seen as one for the future rather than a starter in high-stakes qualifiers.
Nigeria currently sit fourth in their group on seven points, six adrift of leaders South Africa. With two critical fixtures ahead, Nwabali’s fitness could determine whether the Super Eagles remain in contention for a World Cup spot.
