Former Super Eagles forward, Brown Ideye, has officially retired from professional football, closing the curtain on a career that spanned nearly 20 years.

The 36-year-old, who was part of Nigeria’s victorious 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad, made the announcement in an emotional message on his social media pages, describing the decision as one filled with mixed emotions.

“After much thought and consideration, with a heart full of mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football,” Ideye wrote, expressing gratitude for the opportunities and experiences the game afforded him.

Beginning his journey at Bayelsa United, Ideye went on to enjoy a well-travelled career with stints in Switzerland, France, Russia, Ukraine, Greece, England, China, Spain, Turkey, Kuwait, and most recently, Enyimba International FC during the 2024/2025 season.

He won several titles along the way, including the NPFL championship with Bayelsa United, the Ukrainian Cup and Super Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk, and the Greek Super League crown with Olympiakos.

Reflecting on his journey, Ideye thanked God, his family, teammates, coaches, and fans for their support, noting that football gave him “unimaginable joy, life-long friendships, unforgettable memories, and the chance to see the beauty of the world.”

A recipient of the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) honor, Ideye represented Nigeria over 30 times, scoring crucial goals and helping the Super Eagles clinch their third AFCON title in 2013 under late coach Stephen Keshi.

“Thank you, Nigeria, for giving me the privilege to wear the national colours and be part of the Super Eagles,” he added.

Though stepping away from the professional stage, Ideye emphasized that football would remain a vital part of his life as he transitions to the next chapter, promising to stay connected to the sport and its community.
