The senatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Anambra South by-election, Donald Amamgbo, has rejected the outcome of the poll held on Saturday, August 16, describing it as a “charade” that undermined the people’s will.
Speaking at a press conference in Awka on Tuesday, Amamgbo alleged that the exercise was marred by irregularities and deliberate sabotage targeted at his party.
“What happened during the election was a carefully orchestrated charade designed to suffocate the people’s voice and choice, ultimately eroding the credibility of the process,” he said.
According to the official results announced by the Returning Officer, Prof. Frank Ojiako, Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won the election with 90,408 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Azuka Okwuosa, who polled 19,847 votes. Amamgbo of the ADC came third with 2,889 votes.
The ADC candidate, however, insisted that the election failed to reflect the will of the people, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of collusion. He claimed that INEC deliberately withheld accreditation tags for ADC collation agents on the eve of the poll, thereby preventing the party from defending its votes at critical stages.
“This struggle is not about me but about safeguarding the future of our democracy,” he declared. “I will continue to stand with the people, to speak for the voiceless, and to resist every attempt to reduce our democracy to an empty ritual.”
Amamgbo called for a review of the exercise and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in protecting democratic institutions.
