The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun strategic moves toward the 2027 presidential election, even as internal debates intensify over a possible comeback for former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s 2023 candidate, Peter Obi.

The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Tuesday announced the creation of two committees — one to review the zoning of national offices and another to determine the presidential ticket arrangement. Both are expected to submit their reports before the end of the year.

Although PDP leaders insist there has been no formal contact with Jonathan or Obi, sources within the party say informal overtures have been made by some members. While a section of the PDP views their return as a boost to the party’s chances, others argue that both men left the party at crucial moments and should not be courted.

Jonathan, who governed from 2010 to 2015, faces a constitutional hurdle over his eligibility. The 2018 amendment to the Nigerian Constitution bars anyone who has completed another president’s tenure and been sworn in twice from contesting again. Legal interpretations differ on how it applies to him.

Some PDP governors, including Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, are also being quietly promoted by loyalists as potential presidential candidates.

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed PDP’s manoeuvres, insisting President Bola Tinubu will secure re-election in 2027 regardless of who emerges from the opposition. APC officials described the PDP as “a party in intensive care” struggling to find direction.

With the zoning outcome expected before year-end, the coming months will reveal whether Jonathan or Obi’s names will formally enter the PDP’s 2027 race — or remain political speculation.
