Manchester United secured the Premier League Summer Series title following a 2-2 draw against Everton in Atlanta on Sunday, thanks to standout performances from Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.
United topped the table with seven points from three matches, having earlier defeated West Ham 2-1 and Bournemouth 4-1 in the round-robin pre-season tournament across the United States.
Fernandes, who scored from the penalty spot and provided an assist, praised the club’s recent efforts to improve competition within the squad.
“We needed better depth and more competition. That’s how we raise the standards and push everyone,” said the Portuguese midfielder, adding that he hopes the club will secure one or two more signings.
United, who finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League last season, are eager to restore their former glory.
“This club was built on winning. It’s time to get back to that,” Fernandes added. “Our fans have stuck by us through the difficult times, and we owe them better.”
19′ – Fernandes opened the scoring from the spot after Amad Diallo was fouled by James Tarkowski.
40′ – Iliman Ndiaye equalised for Everton, converting a pass from Idrissa Gana Gueye.
69′ – Mason Mount restored United’s lead with a fine finish after being set up by Fernandes.
75′ – Everton drew level once more, courtesy of an own goal by Ayden Heaven, whose attempted clearance off a Diallo back-pass deflected into the net.
Meanwhile, manager Ruben Amorim handed a first start to Bryan Mbeumo, the new arrival from Brentford, who had missed earlier fixtures due to extended pre-season preparations.
West Ham Outclass Bournemouth with Help from New Signing Diouf
In an earlier fixture, West Ham United clinched a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth, with goals from Niclas Füllkrug and Jarrod Bowen — both created by recent signing El Hadji Malick Diouf.
Signed on July 15, the Senegalese left-back made an immediate impact, assisting both goals and drawing praise from his teammates.
“He’s only been here a few weeks, but you’d think he’s been part of the squad for years,” said Bowen. “He’s humble, fits into the group well, and clearly a top-class player.”
24′ – Diouf’s low cross found Bowen, who unselfishly laid it off to Füllkrug to slot home from close range.
67′ – Bowen doubled the lead, smashing in a finish after another well-placed Diouf delivery.
Despite a bright start from Bournemouth, who hit the post within the opening 15 minutes, they failed to convert their chances, and West Ham’s superior clinical edge proved decisive.
“The character in the team was key. We didn’t start perfectly, but we stuck together and got the result,” Bowen said post-match.
