Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday debunked rumours circulating on social media that the National Assembly had approved the creation of new states.
Responding to a point of order raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) during plenary, Akpabio clarified that while the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 state creation proposals, none have completed the rigorous constitutional process required.
“I have seen more than 42 proposals, but not a single one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is very stringent, and none has reached that stage,” Akpabio explained.
He cautioned communities against organising meetings or mobilising based on unverified claims, stressing that no new state has been approved. Akpabio also urged Nigerians to rely only on official updates from the National Assembly regarding constitutional amendments.
Meanwhile, the Senate has scheduled a special session for Wednesday to pay tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, during which lawmakers will reflect on his contributions to national development.
