The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may announce a new National Chairman on Thursday when its National Executive Committee (NEC) convenes in Abuja, sources revealed.

The position became vacant in June after former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, resigned, citing health reasons—a move widely seen as linked to internal power struggles and strategic realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Since his exit, Deputy National Chairman Ali Dalori has been serving in an acting capacity.

According to top party insiders, Thursday’s NEC meeting will focus on several critical issues, including the appointment of a substantive chairman, constitutional review updates, and congress preparations.

One source disclosed that President Bola Tinubu’s position will play a decisive role in determining the party’s direction. Influential stakeholders, including members of the Progressives Governors Forum, are said to be lobbying for their preferred candidates.

Leading Contenders

Former Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, are emerging as frontrunners. Both hail from the North Central zone, which is pushing for the chairmanship to return to the region.

While some party leaders favor retaining Dalori as acting chairman until an elective convention is held, others insist a substantive chairman should be named immediately.

APC Constitution Backing

Under Article 13.3 of the APC Constitution (2022 amendment), the NEC has the authority to appoint a National Chairman and even constitute a caretaker committee when necessary.

Deputy National Secretary Festus Fuanter confirmed that the NEC meeting will take place on July 24, 2025, at the APC headquarters in Abuja, adding that the agenda includes discussions on e-registration, by-elections, and congresses.

Lobbying Intensifies

Sources said the President was briefed during a meeting with key APC figures at the Villa on Monday. While details remain unclear, indications suggest talks centered on leadership succession.

Several party insiders believe Thursday’s session will be decisive. “The NEC is a powerful organ of the party,” one official noted. “It will set the tone for who takes over from Ganduje and provide a clear roadmap ahead of the 2027 elections.”

President Tinubu, who attended the previous two NEC meetings, is expected at Thursday’s gathering.
