A tragic accident that occurred on Monday night along the Owode-Ijako stretch of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has claimed two lives and left nine others injured.
The crash, which involved a red DAF truck, a white Mazda bus, and a yellow tricycle (Keke NAPEP), happened near the Tipper Garage area, according to a traffic report released by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) on Tuesday.
According to the report, the incident was triggered after the driver of the DAF truck parked on a sloped entrance to a warehouse with the engine still running and the handbrake applied. He reportedly left the vehicle to deliver his waybill to warehouse security personnel when the truck unexpectedly rolled backward onto the expressway.
The reversing truck collided with the oncoming Mazda bus and tricycle, resulting in a fatal chain reaction.
Casualties and Emergency Response
A total of 14 individuals were involved in the crash — 11 males and three females. Initial reports indicated that one male died on the spot, while nine others — seven men and two women — were rushed to Ifo General Hospital for treatment.
However, hospital reports confirmed that a second male victim later succumbed to his injuries, bringing the death toll to two.
Eyewitnesses and emergency responders from TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the police were on the scene to manage the situation and facilitate rescue efforts.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise greater caution, especially when parking heavy-duty vehicles on slopes, to prevent similar tragedies.
