Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that he will rotate his squad as they prepare to face Flamengo in a crucial Club World Cup Group D clash on Friday, citing extreme weather and player fatigue as key concerns.

With both clubs level on three points after opening wins—Chelsea defeating LAFC and Flamengo overcoming Esperance—the upcoming encounter is likely to determine who finishes top of the group.

Speaking ahead of the match, Maresca acknowledged the challenge of maintaining player performance levels deep into the season, especially under sweltering conditions.

The heat is a big factor,” Maresca admitted during Thursday’s press briefing. “We’ll need to rotate some players—probably three to five per match. It’s unrealistic to expect anyone to perform at 100% over 11 straight months.”

The Italian coach said he has reduced both the intensity and length of training sessions to help players preserve energy, shifting the focus to tactics rather than physical workload.

He also commented on the limited break his squad had after lifting the Europa Conference League title on May 28.

“It almost feels like pre-season,” Maresca said. “We had a short break after the Premier League, but this is a serious tournament. We’re here to compete and try to win it.”

On other matters, Maresca voiced his support for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who is currently under investigation for a potential anti-doping rule violation.

“Misha is one of our own, and I trust all my players. I haven’t had a recent conversation with him, but he seemed okay the last time we spoke. Until there’s more information, I can’t say much more.”

As Chelsea prepares to take on Flamengo—who, unlike Chelsea, are more accustomed to the hot climate—Maresca is focused on managing resources wisely while pushing for another trophy to cap the season.
