Nigerian-American Afrobeats star Davido is facing criticism from fans after proudly announcing his participation in the ongoing US presidential election, with many accusing him of hypocrisy for not showing the same enthusiasm toward Nigeria’s elections.

On October 5, 2024, Davido took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a picture of himself with an “I voted” sticker, celebrating his first-ever experience casting a ballot in the US election. “I voted for the first time ever!” he wrote, expressing excitement about exercising his civil right.

However, the post quickly sparked backlash from Nigerian fans, who pointed out that the singer had not been as vocal or engaged during Nigeria’s presidential elections in 2023. Many users accused Davido of neglecting his responsibilities as a Nigerian citizen, with some questioning why he chose to participate in the US election but not in his own country’s political process.

“This guy is a hypocrite,” one commenter wrote. “You’ve never voted in any presidential election in Nigeria, but now you’re seeking validation from Americans.”

Another user echoed similar frustrations, saying, “You fit vote for yankee presidential candidate but you can’t vote for Nigeria’s presidential candidates. Una just useless for this so-called yeyebrity… make yankee people dey support you if them don dey banta you for Twitter like that.”

Davido’s admission that he voted for the first time led many to call him out for hypocrisy, with some questioning his previous lack of involvement in Nigeria’s electoral process. Social media personality Daniel Regha also weighed in, writing, “Davido, where was this energy during the Nigerian general election? You didn’t show proof of vote, didn’t support voters, or even use your platform to call out the INEC when there were reports of electoral malpractices across the country. But now you’re proud to vote in the US election? This is not the achievement you think it is.”

Others asked, “In your entire life? Not even in Nigeria?” questioning why Davido had never previously participated in Nigerian elections.

While Davido has not responded to the backlash, his post continues to stir a heated debate about celebrity activism and political engagement.
