Nigerian highlife singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has agreed with Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton that afrobeats music lacks depth.
In a podcast interview, Flavour supported Banton’s view, stating that Afrobeats lacks depth because its artists are lazy.
“I understand what Buju Banton is trying to say. Kids of today [present crop of afrobeats artists] don’t want stress; they just want to vibe,” he lamented.
Flavour suggested that Banton might be trying to inspire a change in the genre. He also made it clear that he is a highlife artist, not an Afrobeats artist, and criticized Western media for labeling all African artists as part of the Afrobeats genre.
