Nigerian music legend Onyeka Onwenu, famously known as the “Elegant Stallion,” has passed away at the age of 72. On Tuesday, after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okolie, CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, in Banana Island, Lagos, Onwenu reportedly collapsed. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital but unfortunately did not survive.

A source who wished to remain anonymous said, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals tonight. After performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but couldn’t make it.”

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onwenu started her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She produced numerous albums and hit singles, including the popular song “One Love.” Onwenu also acted in several Nollywood films and received numerous awards for her contributions to music and film, establishing herself as a pioneer of Nigerian music.

Beyond entertainment, Onwenu was active in politics. In 2013, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture, and in 2016, she became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. Her contributions to Nigerian society were recognized in 2011 when she was awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
